Grandparent Diagnosed With Vascular Dementia? 2 Types Of Care You Should Plan For Now

Vascular dementia is a form of dementia that is due to blood not getting to the brain fast enough. This can happen due to stroke, diabetes, or heart problems. This disease causes problems with memory, as well as language problems. Your grandparent will no longer be able to solve problems, such as do their checkbook or another type of arithmetic. As they progress, they will need much more care as they will no longer be able to care for themselves. There are different types of care available to help you, two of which are listed below.

In Home Care

You may prefer that your grandparent stay home as long as they can, or you may want them to stay home until they pass away. One way you can do this is to hire in home care.

In home care will provide many services to help your grandparent as well as you. They can help your grandparent with personal care, such as personal hygiene, dressing, and showering or bathing. They will help your parent walk and provide things to you that may be needed, such as a walker.

Some in home care services will do laundry, housekeeping, run errands, take your grandparent to doctor's appointments, prepare meals, and more. An in home caregiver can also provide your grandparent with social activities or simply sit and converse with them.

Memory Care

As your grandparent progresses through this disease, they will become much harder to care for. They may become aggressive towards you and scream and try to hit you. They will have to wear adult diapers and you will have to change these and clean them up. All of this can be very stressful on a person and you may find this affecting you.

At this point, it may be time for memory care. This is like a nursing home but specializes in dementia and other memory problems. There will be a nurse on staff at all times and doctors will be available. The memory care will have activities for your grandparent such as simple crafts, dancing, socials with other patients, and more.

Memory care units are completely locked down so there is no way your grandparent would be able to get out. Because of this, your grandparent is free to walk around the complex

Talk with both an in home senior care service and a memory care service in your area to learn much more about them.
